The Tenerife Airport disaster, which occurred on March 27, 1977, remains the deadliest accident in aviation history. Two Boeing 747 jumbo jets, KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, collided on the runway in thick fog at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport), resulting in the loss of 583 lives. A Chain of Unfortunate Events

The accident unfolded amidst a chaotic series of events. A bomb threat at Gran Canaria Airport earlier that day caused a diversion of several flights, including the two involved in the collision, to the smaller Los Rodeos Airport. The airport, already congested, quickly became overwhelmed. The fog rolling in further exacerbated the situation, reducing visibility to near-zero.

Communication Breakdown

The most significant contributing factor was a critical breakdown in communication between the KLM crew, the Pan Am crew, and the airport control tower. The KLM crew, under pressure to depart and believing they had received clearance for takeoff, began their takeoff roll. Crucially, they misunderstood the instructions relayed by the control tower, which were further complicated by the use of non-native languages.

Simultaneously, the Pan Am aircraft was taxiing on the same runway, still within the fog's dense grasp. The KLM 747, accelerating rapidly, impacted the Pan Am 747, severing a significant portion of the Pan Am aircraft’s fuselage. The resulting fire consumed much of both aircraft, leaving little chance of survival for many on board.
