Texture gradient is a monocular depth cue, meaning it's a visual cue that helps us perceive depth using only one eye. It relies on the way the apparent texture of a surface changes with distance. As a surface recedes into the distance, the texture elements appear smaller, more densely packed, and less distinct. Conversely, closer surfaces exhibit larger, more clearly defined, and less densely packed texture elements. This difference in perceived texture density and detail provides crucial information about the relative distances of objects within a visual scene.

How Texture Gradient Works

The effectiveness of texture gradient stems from the principles of perspective and spatial scaling. Imagine looking at a cobblestone street. The cobblestones near your feet are clearly visible, with individual stones easily distinguishable. However, as your gaze moves further down the street, the cobblestones appear progressively smaller and more tightly clustered, eventually merging into an indistinct mass. This change in the apparent size and spacing of the texture elements is the texture gradient. Our brains interpret this gradual change as a cue indicating distance and depth.
